In July, 2016, the Canadian Moose Travelling Hockey Team took in a tour of
the land downunder, flying from Toronto into the winter temperatures of
Sydney Australia! Temperatures are a fair bit warmer in Australia than in
Canada – the type of mild temperatures that might make winter a lot more
We played four games in Australia against teams in Erina, Canterbury,
Liverpool and Warners Bay. We had a full men’s team and had to supplement
the women’s team with a few local players. Each of the games provided the
usual challenges for each of our teams – different styles of dressing rooms
(if there were rooms at all) shower facilities and vastly different quality
of ice and arena structures. Our hosts in each game were very gracious and
after a couple of the games we spent time together enjoying the local
beverages and having something to eat.
In addition to the hockey, we had a fair bit of time to explore the area,
either in tours or on our own. We visited the Blue Mountains and the
Featherdale Wildlife Park, where many of the team were able to spend a
little quality time with koalas and kangaroos! We explored the core of
Sydney, Manly and Bondi Beaches, the Opera House and a couple of the players
took the chance to climb the famous Sydney bridge in the harbor!
A longtime helper with the Moose, Jim Hutchinson, hosted all of the Canadian
Moose members at his waterfront home and welcomed us with a big barbeque,
including the chance to sample a little kangaroo meat! Jim also hosted us at
a rugby league game with his team, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs as they
came away with a win against the St George Dragons!
The Moose would like to thank Henry from AAT Kings Tours who made this an
exceptional trip! Henry’s knowledge of the area and his humour helped make
this a truly wonderful experience for all participants!
